Chapter Six

Two small, impish demons escorted Piper to a gigantic bedroom, about five times the size of her room at home. Although scarcely furnished, the furniture looked expensive. Then again, this was a castle, so they obviously weren’t short on money. Even so, Piper felt uncomfortable in the room. Beautiful or not, she recognized a prison when she saw one, and the bars on the windows reminded her that she couldn’t leave. So did the guard outside her door—another demon.

She wished she could see her dad again. Death had promised she’d see him tonight, but could she trust Death’s promise or not? For all the things she’d heard about the Horsemen, trustworthiness wasn’t among them.

Darkness fell in through the barred window. Outside, in the barren land overrun with demons, she wouldn’t be safe, she knew that. But was she safe inside the castle walls? Dread settled in her stomach when her thoughts jumped from her safety to her dad. He’d summoned a Horseman. Of course. That night, years ago, only a day before her dad became ill. She’d seen him perform a ritual and summon something. She’d never realized he had summoned a Horseman, of all things. She’d always suspected either the summoning ritual had made her father ill, or it was due to the presence of the thing he’d summoned. But that he’d gone so far as to summon a harbinger of death and doom... she’d never suspected that. The notion tormented her. Why would he set such an atrocity loose?

Piper sighed and sat down on the bed. The soft mattress squeaked underneath her weight. When she lay back on it, she felt like she could fall asleep any moment. She had no idea she was so exhausted, but why shouldn’t she be? Being chased by three-legged hellhounds would do that to a person.

A knock on the door startled her. She must’ve fallen asleep after all. The candles in the room had burned down to stubs, and darkness surrounded her.

“Yes?” Piper responded hesitantly.

“I brought you a dress to wear during dinner, miss.” The door opened seconds later, revealing a girl of about Piper’s age. What the heck is she doing in this place? Then Piper spotted the black, feathery wings on her back.

“What are you?” Piper couldn’t help but blurt out the question.

The girl smiled, not in an unpleasant way, although it seemed more like she mocked Piper for asking such a stupid question. “A fallen angel,” she said. “I’ve come to help you get dressed.”

“Do I have to wear a dress?” Piper asked. She shot a curious glance at the garment the girl was holding. A simple, elegant black dress.

“We do like formal attire, down here in the Mirrorland,” the girl said. “We’re old-fashioned, I guess. Probably because we’re all so very old.”

“How old are you?”

“You should never ask a girl her age. But fine. I’m well over three centuries old.” She chuckled when she saw Piper’s shocked reaction. “I told you, you shouldn’t have asked. However, I’d advise you to put this on.
